Housing Department

 

The Mission of the Housing Department of the Spanish Action League is to provide services to residents of Onondaga County with low to moderate income  assisting them to obtain fair housing. We also assist in obtaining rental subsidy housing that is secure, decent, and affordable. 

 

 Services that we provide:

 

  • Referrals (phone calls to agencies, lawyers, and utility assistance)

  • Mediation (complaints and tenant - landlord disputes)

  • Interpertations and Translations

  • Filling out applications (subsidy and rent)

  • Housing code enforcement assistance 

  • Preventing homelessness or helping to find your dream home

 

Our program assists the homeless and those in danger of becoming homeless. Services are provided in order to assist them with evictions or any other problems that may cause homelessness.

 

  • Assist clients to obtain affordable housing, gain access to utility services, and case management as needed to eliminate barriers to rent or own a residence

  • Assist with tenant/landlord mediation

  • Provide information on housholds hazards, environmental benefits, and other community conditions 

  • Offer first time homebuyer's classes, banking alternatives, and other services to help community members become homeowners

  • Provide services for those at risk of homelessness

 

 

 

 

The First Time Home Buyer's Course:

  The Project Goals: 

1. Assist new homeowners through the Full-Cycle lending process

2. Service as case-manager and counsel clients during and after the home buying process

3. Develop collaboration with local regional partners to generate additional resources and maximize effectives

4. Use homeownership as a driving force in revitalization efforts across the Lawyers

 

 

Homeownership course benefits any family, especially those with limited English skills. Owning a home is the first step toward gaining wealth. The course benefits the target audience for two reason: the course is taught in Spanish for those who have limitied English skills and all are welcome to particpate in the course.
